The Government of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is working to address long-standing challenges in its solid waste management sector, guided by the 2000 Waste Management Act and supported through the World Bank-funded Unleashing the Blue Economy in the Caribbean (UBEC) programme. Unite Caribbean plays a pivotal role in this mission by leading the development of the country’s first National Solid Waste Management Strategy, a 20-year roadmap for building an environmentally sound and resilient waste system.

Unite Caribbean leads the project as part of a consortium with Espelia, providing leadership, technical expertise, and stakeholder coordination to ensure its success. The team includes a Waste Management Specialist responsible for technical analysis and strategy development, and Legal, Financial, and Gender & Social Inclusion Specialists who ensure the strategy is equitable, financially sound, and legally grounded.

The project’s actions encompass comprehensive assessments of the current waste management system across SVG’s nine inhabited islands, detailed field inspections of the country’s five landfill sites, and a dedicated feasibility study for on-island plastics recycling built on the success of All Islands Recycling. These are complemented by stakeholder consultations, gender-inclusive engagement, and financial and economic analysis to ensure the strategy is practical and locally adapted.

Expected results include a robust, evidence-based National Solid Waste Management Strategy, tailored to the realities of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. This deliverable will strengthen the country’s waste management systems, support its economic development goals, and protect its natural environment for the long term.
