The Government of Trinidad and Tobago is in the process of transforming its municipal solid waste (MSW) sector to develop a sustainable, integrated waste management system grounded in circular economy principles. The country’s Recycling Policy sets an ambitious goal of reducing landfilling by 50% over 10 years. Achieving this target requires robust infrastructure and strategies to maximize the recovery of recyclable materials, including dry and organic fractions.
A recent pre-feasibility study supported by IDB showed that the implementation of a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) with a treatment capacity of 2,000 t/day can achieve a MSW material recovery rate of up to 45%. This study is part of the Too Good to Waste initiative which aims to improve the waste management sector in the region, advancing to a circular economy and reducing methane emissions
This project’s activities will build up the existing research to provide a comprehensive feasibility study and business case as well as design the transaction structuing for the proposed MRF and transfer stations in Trinidad and Tobago.
