Unite Caribbean, in partnership with Seureca, undertook a comprehensive assessment of waste management practices to develop and implement a model waste segregation, collection and recycling program for OECS that takes into account a regional approach, self-financing, sustainability and business viability.
Unite Caribbean’s actions are as follows
- * Development of an OECS model for the collection, transport and processing of plastic waste.
- * Identification of two other OECS territories to demonstrate the OECS model.
- * Structuring the logistics chain for the export of plastics and other recyclable products.
- * Implementation of a sustainable communication and awareness-raising campaign for the general public and private stakeholders on the threats to health and the environment, the reduction of plastic consumption and the collection of plastic waste.
- * Support for the existing pilot project in Saint Lucia.
The results achieved include
- * Waste classification exercises in Dominica and Grenada.
- * Facilitation of two shipments of plastic waste from Dominica
- * Acquisition of equipment for the Queen’s Park materials recovery facility in Grenada, including a plastic shredder.
- * Support for the legislative process to implement a deposit system for beverage containers in Saint Lucia.
- * Increased awareness of the importance of plastics recycling in all three countries.
