Unite Caribbean is leading the development of a comprehensive waste characterization study in Grenada, focusing on the Perseverance Landfill. This initiative, funded by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) through the Centre for Clean Air Policy (CCAP), aims to strengthen Grenada’s waste management strategies and provide reliable data for policy and operational decisions.

Role of Unite Caribbean

Unite Caribbean is responsible for designing and implementing the methodology for the waste characterization study, ensuring it is adapted to Grenada’s specific context and international best practices.

Actions of Unite Caribbean

The team will analyze existing data (including NWMS 2021 and Recycle OECS), design sampling and sorting protocols, and conduct two waste characterization studies. The studies will cover both high and low tourist seasons to capture seasonal variations in waste generation. In addition, Unite Caribbean will organize and deliver two training sessions for local stakeholders, combining theoretical and practical components.

Results (expected and achieved)

The project will generate precise data on waste composition, recyclable fractions, and organic waste streams, enabling authorities to better plan recycling and waste reduction initiatives. Training sessions will build local capacity in waste management and ensure the sustainability of the methodology developed. Ultimately, this study will contribute to more efficient solid waste management in Grenada, reducing environmental impacts and supporting the country’s climate resilience.
